The cost of owning a racehorse varies but the main
components are training fees, shoeing bills, vets fees and BHA costs (race
entry fees, jockey fees, registrations etc.). When the horse is at racing
fitness £1700 per month would normally cover all costs. This cost can be
reduced by getting sponsorship for the horse (relatively easy) and
registering for VAT under the horseracing “Scheme”. Then all VAT, including
the purchase price of the horse, can be reclaimed. This would reduce the
cost to about £1450 per month making a syndicate membership possible for
as little as £72 per month.
A trip to the races with your own horse is an exciting
experience, from socialising in the “Owners & Trainers” bar then
watching your horse being saddled, standing in the parade ring with the
trainer, meeting the jockey to the actual race itself.
The thrill of leading in a winner, with the following
champagne reception offered by most courses, is a never to be forgotten
experience. The thrill of ownership will be enhanced with visits to the
stable to watch your horse work, school and progress. Some of our owners
visit regularly on a Saturday morning and enjoy breakfast with the staff
after watching their horses work.
We also hold an annual “Owners Day” when you can meet
the other owners, enjoy lunch and drinks, view all the horses and watch
them parade on the lawn. In addition there is a quarterly newsletter to
keep you up to date with all the news at Southfield. So you can see
racehorse ownership is affordable, rewarding and will provide you with many
exciting, lasting memories.
