Southfield Stables is a family run business established
by Linda Jewell in the picturesque village of Sutton Valence in Kent. Her
daughter Karen, an accomplished amateur rider, is assistant trainer while
Linda's partner Paul is gallops manager as well assisting in the buying and
breaking of the horses. They are ably assisted by the team of first class
stable lads and lasses, stable conditional jockey, secretarial and
financial staff. The stable has boxes for 26 horses with grass paddocks on
the site for daily turnout.
The stable also has the use of four more paddocks
adjoining the yard for summer resting horses. There is a three furlong all
weather oval track for exercising the horses as well as a grass hill gallop
where the horses can be brought to a peak for races. Working horses on
hills is a proven way of getting them fit and building stamina, and the
yard is surrounded by quiet, hilly, country lanes and bridle paths enabling
varied work to be carried out. Also at the yard is an all weather schooling
ménage for an introduction to jumping and one of the paddocks doubles as a
schooling area with practice hurdles and fences. The whole set up is
professional and caters for all the various needs of the range of horses in
Linda's care.
